The Brazilian Institute of Lawyers (IAB), supported by its Statute and the oath of its members to defend democratic legality, publicly rejects with vehemence the absurd statements by federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro regarding the possible closure of the Brazilian Supreme Court.
In its 175 years of existence, the IAB has always been a spokesperson for the libertarian aspirations and fundamental rights and guarantees of Brazilian citizens. During the military dictatorship, established with the coup d’état of 1964, the Institute maintained firm and courageous positions in combatting the breakdown of institutional order.
At this moment, when threats to the democratic institutions of the country are being proclaimed, the IAB reaffirms its position of not compromising with political authoritarianism and will stand with all democrats in defense of constitutional values.
